Education
Education
Welcome to the Education Group.
AIM
To bring awareness and familiarity with environmental concerns to the residents of the town including the children. The group has begun working with the Primary School and it is hoped to involve older children through working with Ryedale School and/or creating a local Youth Environment Group, possibly in conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
EXPLANATION & PROJECTS
Kirkbymoorside Primary School is a registered Eco School and one of North Yorkshire County Council’s Sustainable Schools. The later means that Emma Cusson (NYCC’s Sustainability Officer) is working with the school on quotes from companies to make the school building more carbon neutral (lighting, radiator valves, etc). Through this initiative the school has a lot more access to learning materials. The school has a wildlife and a vegetable garden, a peace garden and is looking to plant fruit trees.
An Environment Week was held at the school in 2008 and 2009 with one day given to each topic: Food, Waste & Recycling, Health, Energy and Transport.
A Greener Living Course was run by members of the group in 2010 with funding from Ryedale School.
In the coming year we plan to organise “It’s easy when you know how” workshops where skills such as knitting, sewing and cooking can be passed on.
